    I see what you mean, but I don’t see an easy way out of this potential problem unless the barred digit is made more distinctive.  It could be made bold, or perhaps colored red, or both.  I do think your idea of the bar, either over or under the digit (meaning zeroes or nines, respectively), is a very nice feature.
