Hi George I agree that the published ecliptic latitude and longitude are somewhat useless, with one major exception. They serve as check on the values derived from the polynomial expansion and further conversion of the moon's RA and declination. In that they seem quite useful. I plowed straight through the nonagesimal calculation and came up to the augmentation of the moon's diameter. In table XLIV, Bowditch provides a way to calculate it. I spent at least an hour attempting to decypher the table until your words on the "signs" penetrated my dense skull and suddenly Part 1 of the table came clear! Part 1 shows three columns, in which the D term is specified from 0 to 30 (apparently degrees) and the left and right side of the columns are labeled with the sign (0 thru 11). Without your explanation, I would have been stuck on that one. If requested, I can post Bowditch's explanation and example, for those that do not have it.
