George: Thanks for the information. > > My tongue was slightly in my cheek, but my point was I might have to wait some time for one of the Moons to be in position, but our moon occults a star much more frequently. I spent about 2 hours watching Jupiter last summer, and could't really tell which moon was which. I suppose the best way to go about it is to have a list of the events and then you will know what moon is occulting. My 4.5 inch reflector gives quite a good image, but I need much more practice. > > In [7265], Bruce asked- "Has anyone had any luck putting the concept into > practice?" I was wondering to what extent ocultaion of stars by our moon was used, but it's nice to know that the Jupiter method was well used. I have read here that navigators of old would use any handy bit of land to plop a telescope on and get a good longitude fix by Jupiter's moons. > Working out an occultation of a star by our moon by longhand looks a tad intimidating, but in these days of java aplets and spreadsheets, I wonder if it could be easily put into practice. Thanks again. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ Navigation List archive: www.fer3.com/arc To post, email NavList@fer3.com To , email NavList-@fer3.com -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
