    I get it from figure 4 that the spacing of the additional lines is proportional to the lengths of the sides (LOPs) making up the cocked hat. But just knowing that doesn't tell you what spacing to use since many spacings will satisfy the proportion.

    And your explanation doesn't help, by "side" do you mean one of the LOPs? And if you measure that and then use it for the spacing then the line might be outside of the cocked hat. Just what do you mean:

    "With the scale measure the length of a the side of the cocked hat and
    with the parallel grid draw a parallel to the LOP through that side at
    the measured distance."
    Which side? Which LOP?

    Can you provide a diagram?
