Greg, I don't think your method actually produces the Symmedian point. It is my understanding that you measure the angle (at the vertex) between the median and the bisector (not the spacing) and then draw the line the same number of degrees on the side opposite to the median, basically flipping the median over using the bisector as the axis. Your method only approximates this for some triangles but try in on the 20-70-90 triangle that I posted before:
