It takes practice. Do not try to to invent sophisticated strategies to improve your results, it is a skill that requires repetitive training.
Years ago, I was a competitive target shooter at international level, so centering one circle inside another circle was something I spent a lot of time practicing. It is a skill that is useful in using the A-12 sextant. I am sure you will find that the more you try it, the better you will get.
