Dear Sir,
I am writing to see if you are able to help me.
My wife's grandfather (who is 84) has just been moved into a home.
Whilst clearing his previous home of 60 years, I came across an instrument, which he used during the second world war, as he was a navigation trainer in the RAF and was posted to Canada to undertake training for the duration of the second world war.
The item in question is some form of compass, (please accept my apologies as I am somewhat ignorant in these matters). There is a reference on it's base as follows:
A.M. Astro Compass Mk II
Sadly, it is in a state of disrepair and we would like to restore it to it's former glory as a memento of his war service.
We have been advised that your organisation may be able to point us in the right direction as to where we could obtain more information on the above object.
Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated.
Yours faithfully,
James Longstaff.
