    Re: FAQ Proposal
    From: George Huxtable
    Date: 2003 Oct 3, 22:21 +0100

I would like to back Dan Allen's proposal and offer what help I can with
his suggested FAQ list (as long as it's someone, such as Dan, organising
    it, rather than me).
But I would like to sound a note of caution. We shouldn't appear to be
discouraging sensible questions (or even naive ones from beginners), just
because we know (though they may not) that the matters have been discussed
before. It does no real harm to trot them out for another airing, and
because of the way threads on this list can twist and turn, sometimes a new
aspect of a familiar matter can be brought to light. After all, it's always
easy to press the delete button. And this list isn't so heavily loaded that
a few unproductive enquiries would be of concern. Sometimes, it's of
interest just to know that such questions are being asked.
The recent enquiry about lunars-from-altitudes was a case in point. It was
a sensible question; and because it's been dealt with in the past it was
easy to dig out a stock reply, which may (or may not) have provided a
satisfactory answer. At the same time, it may have provided a bit of
illumination to new subscribers who are unaware of our list's archived
When I pointed out that Peter Fogg had asked a question that had been
considered before, I hope that comment wasn't taken as a criticism: it
wasn't meant that way, just as a relevant fact. As time proceeds, the
number of questions that have been asked before steadily increases, and the
available novelties must shrink correspondingly. Keep on asking, I say!
