    Expedition to document Sumner's confluence?
    From: Jim Thompson
    Date: 2004 Apr 20, 09:00 -0300

I hope this is not too far off-topic.

Sumner discovered the celestial line of position in the south end of St.
George's Channel, very near the confluence of latitude 52d N and longitude
006d W, between Tusker Light and Small's Light. I'd like to sail out to
that confluence and document it by GPS for the Degree Confluence Project
http://www.confluence.org/. While there, and weather permitting, I would
like to shoot a sextant sun line to top it off.

Here is Sumner's map of the area, from Peter Ifland's book:

Being Canadian I do not know how to go about organizing this project. And
we are not rich, so our budget is limited. But my wife wants to visit
Ireland again, and I want to see the naval museum at Greenwich. This boat
trip and potential visit with other CN enthusiasts would be a bonus, if we
    could pull it off.

52N 005W has been documented, by the way (Fishguard, Pembrokeshire, Wales):
    http://www.confluence.org/confluence.php?lat=52&lon=-5

    as has
52N 008W (35.8 km (22.2 miles) ENE of Corcaigh, County Cork, Ireland):
    http://www.confluence.org/confluence.php?lat=52&lon=-8

but 52N 007W (in the water just off Ireland) and 52N 008W have not been
    documented.

Do any of the UK boaters have any suggestions for, or interest in mounting a
holiday mini-expedition to get that done, say next summer (2005)?
