    Honoring the K.I.S.S principle, I keep a 12 ft length of light
    line--knotted every foot with a Franciscan/monks/heaving-line knot on
    the lower end for weight and ease of viewing--tied to my sextant case.
    
    Eyeball or put a thumb on a point and count the knots. Mentally
    interpolate, or if thumbed fold it over itself. Getting within an inch
    or two is easy.  No muss, no fuss, no rust.
    
    Plus, it's the quintessential handy-dandy weather tool.  If the rope is
