I contacted Andy Schell, the author of the essay, and he pointed me to the canonical version of the article at Yachting World (the link I posted yesterday was clearly a copy on one of their sponsor's sites):
Any thoughts on this article? What sextants can we identify in the photos? Did you notice the story about the error in a Sun sight early in the voyage? They forgot to correct a Sun sight. These things happen! :) He says in the article that they had left out refraction, but I suspect he really means the entire Sun correction (net about +12' for a standard Sun sight).
