Thanks for the reply. That clears up the matter. When I go back and look at previous sights, and note the comments I have made, the sights that show a greater error indicate that the moon is very faint or I am getting close to the end of the range of usable lunar distances your online program shows. When I take shots with a nearly full moon with crystal blue sky the results reliably come in +/- 0.1' or so. Stars and planets seem to have a little more spread but I have not had the same issue with the smaller crescent moon and sun. I tend to use the 2X monocular mainly because using the 12X inverting scope is such a bear to use. Even though I don't get the precision the average seems to work out well and even with the 2X, the spread in the sights is normally around +/- 0.2'. I have thought of getting another scope but in reality the 2X is the most practical when actually sailing. Besides sextant range, what other criteria does your online program use for predicted usable lunars?
