English Scientific Instrument Trade during the Industrial Revolution 1760-1851

This 300 page doctoral thesis popped up while I was looking for a manufacturer of a box sounding sextant now on eBay. Some might consider this entertaining reading.

It’s a 1999 Doctor of Philosophy Thesis for the University of York on the listed title above and seems to be well done by Alison Dorthy Morrison-Law.

Many familiar manufacturers names pop up and she has maps of various cities showing their locations. She discusses the challenges of business during a time of great changes and the intrigue and espionage that took place between companies and nations. She gives good evidence to her opinions that many big name manufacturers and contractors were in survival mode rather than any present-day luxury.

I checked for familiar names but, unfortunately, there is no index. There are 40 pages of detailed references.
    Interesting.
