As I understand it, the BBC are trying to simulate Cook's 'First Voyage' or rather the part of it from modern Cairns to modern Djakarta. I gather that a GPS will be locked away but to do it properly all charts should be locked away as well which would not impress the Oz equivalent of the Board of Trade (or whatever they call themselves these days). I have a feeling that the BBC are missing the point in that Cook's interest (and undoubted skill) in lunars was not actually for navigation per se but for surveying. Cook had Larcum Kendall's K1 on his 1772-1775 and 1776-1779 voyages (as did Vancouver when exploring the NW coast of America). This was a 1770 copy of Harrison's 1761 H4 NG
