Doug Royer wrote- "An interesting part of the book was Bligh's observation of the transit of Venus while in Tahiti." Something seems wrong here, and I ask Doug to recheck that account if he can. Bligh didn't sail with Cook's first voyage, the one where the Transit of Venus was observed, from Tahiti. I'll try. It's been a few years since I read the book. Whether or not an observation was successful I can't really remember. There was an attempt to observe some celestial event, in any case, while Bounty lay at anchor in Tahiti. There were a couple of pages of the book devoted to the preparation of gear and personnel to observe an event. The Admiralty and a scientific society (I can't remember which) had an observation of some celestial event on the list for Bounty to accomplish. Hey, just go get the book and read it. That will clear it up the matter forthwith. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ To post to this group, send email to NavList@fer3.com To , send email to NavList-@fer3.com -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
