    This begs the question -- did the minesweeper have a depth sounder (I assume it did), was it in operation at the time of the grounding, and would it have provided a warning of the reef ahead?  

    Also, the latest depthsounders in the recreational market are "forward looking" and can provide warning of obstacles ahead.  I therefore assume the Navy has had them for years.  Was the Guardian equipped with such a sounder and was it in use?

    It will be interesting to see the full report from the Board of Inquiry.
