      When I read this report I just wanted to scream.
    
    I have been a flight instructor for almost 40 years which means that I
    had to teach navigation to many students. This did not include celestial
    but did include dead reckoning, pilotage and the use of radio navaids
    including direction finders. I always taught them that they must always
    ask themselves the question "does this make sense?" When the precomputed
    LOPs did not work out the answer to this question had to be a big "NO!"
    
    He tried some three star fixes and rejected one of the LOPs because it
    didn't work. Two LOPs will always cross somewhere. The purpose for
    taking a third star is that its LOP acts as an error detector just like
    RAIM does for GPS and when the third LOP didn't form a cocked hat  bells
    and horns and red lights should have been going off all over the nav
    station forcing the navigator to start over from the beginning to find
    his error. This would have included doing a deviation check with a star
    that could not be misidentified. He should have started with the trial
    hypotheses that the magnetic compass was the correct one.
    
    This is a cautionary tale for us all. Always follow up with the question
    "does this make sense."
