    It's true that variation changes year-to-year.  But the amount of change
    is usually a tiny fraction of a degree per year.  A massive movement of
    the magnetic pole would require variation to change much more than that
    (and require those of us who ignore that label in the rose to pay
    attention!).
    
    BTW, some not-too-old introductory navigation texts show the isogonic
    line (the line of zero variation) as running just west of the west coast
    of Florida.  I understand that it's now moved significantly west and
    runs up the Mississippi/Alabama border.
