During the heroic era of polar exploration, Mawson used the dip circle (image attached) to discover the location of the south magnetic pole. The instrument indicates the dip of the magnetic field from the horizon.
How do scientists now know the current location of the pole?
I think it highly unlikely that they still run around in the field using a dip circle!
