    I'll have to go take a look at my source material again, but if I remember
    right wasn't there a cloud deck around 1000' that day and they had dipped
    below that altitude in order to try to spot Howland?
    
    I used to fly out to the Bahamas when I lived in Florida years ago, and know
    exactly what you're talking about re: cloud shadows looking a lot like a
    land mass when viewed from the air.
