TIGHAR makes a big deal of the Betty reception report, she was 14 and living in St. Petersberg Florida. 5,600 NM away from the TIGHAR claimed landing spot on Gardner (Nikumaroro) island. Even TIGHAR's own radio expert (who I have no respect for) only gives it a probability of one chance in 1.5 million. and to even get it to that high of a probability he had to apply lots of lotion and massage his numbers for several days. Since there was not any chance that a signal on Earhart's crystal controled transmitter frequencies of 3105 and 6210 khz this radio expert came up with a Rube Goldberg explanation of having Betty tuning her dad's shortwave radio to 24,840 khz, the fourth harmonic of 6210 since only a signal on such a high frequency had even that 1/1,500,000 probability. The transmitter would put out only a small fraction of one watt of power on such a high
harmonic but their expert claimed several watts to get to his result. There are lots of other reasons to completely discount this reception report but TIGHAR pushes it because it supports their theory. TIGHAR also claims that there were 58 messages received that came from EArhart, but I believe that none of these messages came from her for a number of reasons. In addition to technical radio propagation but without getting to them NONE OF THE MESSAGES HAD LOCATION INFORMATION and if you ask strangers on the street they will tell you the most important piece of information in an emergency message is the location but none of the claimed messages has such information. That, all by itself, is enough to reject all the messages. And most of the 58 are just steady carriers most likely from some radio being tuned up which was common with tube type transmitters. TIGHAR excuses the fact that Earhart did not say she was on Gardner because she couldn't be sure which island she had landed on but TIGHAR's theory is that they flew the 350 NM SSE from Howland because they were hoping to land on one of the Phoenix islands so she had to know she was on one of them. Yet none of the claimed messages contain the wording, "I am on one of the Phoenix islands, come and get me!" I've had lots to say about this on the TIGHAR forum, take a look at these threads: https://tighar.org/smf/index.php/topic,836.0.html https://tighar.org/smf/index.php/topic,883.0.html gl --- On Sat, 8/25/12, Hewitt <hhew36@gmail.com> wrote:
