Haven't read Bill's story, though I will. That aside, the following comes to miond, being that sextants don't "bounce" especially well.
Any old bootlace, even a suitably long piece of cord, tied to the sextants frame in two places makes a virtually "drop-proof" lanyard. Better yet, and the same cannot be said for sextants, the lanyard costs virtually nothing.
