Last week I sent a response to Tom Carr's question about legal requirements for pleasure vessels in the 12 - 20m size range. In it I mentioned the availability of the Navigation Rules (COLREGS) at the CG Web site http://www.uscg.mil/vtm/pages/rules.htm. After firing off my response I went back to check something in the Rules. Since the Rules are about 1.7MB in size, I had saved them locally when I first downloaded them. Surprise -- I had a pdf file of ZERO length. Don't know what the Acrobat reader did when I did a File/Save As, but it sure didn't save the Rules. Next to the "download COLREGS" link on the CG web site is a "download them in pieces" link. This loads them as self-extracting .exe files. Do the self-extract, and one gets wonderous things: 1. The COLREGS in PDF 2. The COLREGS chapter-by-chapter as Word files. 3. All of the illustrations as separate GIF files I STRONGLY recommend this way of doing it for anyone contemplating downloading the rules and wanting to keep a permanent copy. Lu PS - I said "latest version" of the COLREGS in my response to Tom. This time I noticed that the site says it does not reflect the very latest version (which may not be available in hardcopy yet either). There apparently have been some very, very minor revisions which is prompting an update.
