Re: Does "Lifeboat Navigation" exist today?

    John,

Although I  still remember the "old wartime days", when at noon every person potentially in charge of a lifeboat was given a slip of paper detailing the vessel's DR position hourly for the forthcoming 24-hours so as to provide a departure point in the event of a possible sinking, you are certainly correct in your assessment of current protocols. With automatically launched, fully enclosed lifeboats, equipped with EPIRBS and perhaps also radio, as well as satellite telephone  - assuming it all works, relax in comfort and just wait for rescue. Single hand sailors might require some modification of these protocols depending on individual circumstances. Historically, however, there are any number of interesting tales regarding lengthy open boat and/or raft voyages - and perhaps it does make sense to be prepared.
