    The vertical seems to be determined by the coarsest of zeroing, against a 1/4 20 bolt as a stop. Yes, it's land based. It's an astronomical telescope.
    To calibrate it, you need only find 2 identifiable stars. And it WORKS! Is it possible to determine vertical in this way? If so, then vertical is not needed, ironically. That must be the sort of geometry the theodolite uses, no?
