While GPS devices seem to work just fine, in-so-far as I know that is, we can find positions without the use of the sextant, either marine or aircraft.
Absent GPS, and or until some other device becomes generally available, I do not see how one might "shoot the sun" or any other celestial body. Of course I might be missing salient points here, but that is what comes to mind now.
