I believe that you may have misunderstood my comments, or possibly I was not sufficiently clear re what I was driving at concerning a protractor and a plumb bob, essentially what the string and weight are.
I would think that the protractor and plumb bob, particularly on a small boat, would be problematic at best, sort of like shooting at a moving target, from a moving platform. Absent electronics, which I believe is the crux of this discussion, the sextants of today are likely far superior to most anything else available, and will likely remain in use for quite some time.
By the way, thanks for the references to Nicolas de Hilster's posts.
