This Newbie used the carpenter level in his iPhone to measure angle to top of tree about 600 feet away. No way of directly measuring distance. Homes and backyards in way. Then measured off 100 feet with a tape and measured angle again. This is enough to find the distance to the tree, without Google. Then, the tree height can be calc'd to within the uncertainty of two angle measurements.
