The sights where ananolous dip or time error were suspected could not or were not mathematically analyzed to distinguish between these competing factors, though the reasonableness of such errors was discussed. Had the sights involved a number of bodies with different azimuths then one could perform analysis to determine the dip/ anomalous dip. Anomalous dip would be independent of azimuth. Watch error would not.
