Let me add few words. The textbook of 1979 says: "with good horizon, and no strong rolling, the dip is determined by the dip-meter with 0'3 accuracy". And then it concludes: "One has to say that dip-meters still have no widespread practical use in the fleet, though they are present in the inventory of navigational equipment of ALMOST ALL VESSELS. This is explained by the difficulty of working with them for an untrained observer, and insufficient accuracy in the presence of roll. To increase the RELIABILITY of astronomical observations, it is recommended to use the device for the dip determination when the waves are at most 5, Beaufort scale". But they must be on e-bay if all Russian ships were equipped with them:-) Alex.
