One of the passengers, Wally Funk, is an aviation pilot and, given the time period, can be assumed to be familiar with celestial navigation for aircraft navigation.  Would have been cool to do a (quick!) sight.

This points out the absolute necessity of producing a new crop of pocket sextants that go to at least 100 degrees.

Fixing the horizontal coordinates allows a single sight to measure the spacecraft's altitude.

    Cheers,
    Peter
