There are two situations causing these types of phenomena. A strong
negative temperature gradient (super adiabatic lapse rate) leads to an
inferior mirage and a strong positive temperature gradient (inversion)
leads to a superior mirage or even to a mock mirage. In both of these
two cases it depends on the geometrical situation between the abnormal
temperature gradient and the observer whether there appears only a
geometrical deformation, like towering, or a mirror image. A strong
inversion my even lead to infinite refraction and thus to a blank or
    blind strip.
