    I'll agree with you that the dark band of ocean just below the real horizon 
    can be misleading (and I've seen the same thing myself several times), but 
    judging by the pictures it looks like the real horizon is visible just above 
    it (faintly, but it's there). Or maybe the photos don't accurately reflect 
    what you saw with your eyes that day?
