I use sextants because I enjoy them AND because I want to be self-sufficient. Yes, I have had one of my Garmin's die on me, and the same thing could happen to a digital sextant. But there are so many other systems in GPS that have been largely reliable but which could fail and then where would you be? A digital sextant as I envision it would be completely independent of SW radio, WWV, the GPS constellation of satellites, the internet... This is what the US Navy's proposal is also after -- a redundant separate system. Where is the market? Don't most people use sextants either because they enjoy it or they don't trust electronics?
