It seems that nothing was wrong, except my expectations. I hoped that with the sun at high altitude the observed height would agree better with the calculated one. The azimuthal bearing to the east edge of Anacapa Island seems to have been correct, but missed the target. The line had to be shifted vertically by about 1 minute of arc (corresponding to about 4 km) to match the target. This means that the location found from the sun's altitude is in error by about the 1'moa. I understand now that this is the sort of error to expect from having taken the photo with a sextant in-between. Marcel
