The ragged edge appears to be a consequence of the digital zooming procedure, trying to expand, and at the same time smooth, the course blocks in the original image of the Sun. And it enables us to get some notion of the Sun image and is edge, from those coarse blocks, and get some numbers. It's a bit late here now so I will post something tomorrow.
