Dear John and Omar, In connection with your discussion of a larger scale, let me recall that there is one more way to solve the problem of reading the scale: attaching to a quadrant a magnifying glass (adjusted for one's vision). Such magnifying glass was a common feature on sextants from XVIII to the beginning of XX century when it was replaced by micrometer drums. It even exists on one modern sextant (SNO-T), where it is combined with a micrometer drum. Alex.
