Thanks for the replies on this topic. Once I got
back on the computer after sending the original query to the list, I did some
research on the various surveying and mapping agency sites (NOAA, National
Geodetic Survey, etc.) and found a treasure trove of stuff such as references to
geodetic transits, Davidson meridian instruments, etc. Seems that my question
had already been anticipated and answered several generations ago...
:-)
