    Dear Max,

these articles contain the information you need about Bygrave slide rules:

    Kolbe, Geoffrey,
    Bygrave Slide Rule Revisited.
    in: Navigator's Newsletter, No. 93 (Fall 2006), 10 - 13.

    Luykx, John M.
    The Bygrave Position Slide Rule.
    in: Navigator's Newsletter, No. 30 (Fall 1990), 9 - 10.

    Barnes, Colin
Henry Hughes & Son Limited and the Bygrave Slide Rule.
in: Slide Rule GAZETTE, Inaugural Issue, (Autumn 2000), 7 - 11.

The information about the MHR1 and MHR2 is in German:

    Komorowski, Uli
    Der Besteckhhenrechenschieber.
    in: Piekfall, Nr. 84 (2004), 23 - 30.

    Pohlmann, Henning
Die Navigationsrechenschieber MHR1 und MHR2 fr die Kriegsmarine.
in: Khn, Klaus und Karl Kleine (Hrsg.), Dennert & Pape ARISTO 1872-1978 :
    Rechenschieber und mathematisch-geodtische Instrumente, Mnchen 2004, 264 -
    267.

The ARG1 is an instrument to solve the navigational triangle by means of a
    diagram.

It is described in the following article

    Charlwood, David,
    On the Astronomisches Rechengerat ARG1.
    in: Navigator's Newsletter, No. 76 (Summer 2002), 10 - 19.

    There is an ARG1 in the National Maritime Museum Greenwich (in storage);
another one is Royal Navy Submarine Collections (Shelf No. Q35/27/84).

The successor of the ARG1, the ARG3, was still in production in the GDR
after WWII and in use by the East German Merchant Marine: The 1969 edition
(reprinted in 1979) of the manual of astronomical navigation by Steinfatt
and Uhlig contains a chapter on evaluation of star sights by means of the
    ARG3.

In April 2006 an ARG3 was sold on ebay for just over 100 EURO; I doubt that one
could pick up another one so cheap again.

    Best regards
    Wolfgang Kberer

    Ruler

    Hi All

I'm new to this group,so I thought that I would start with a bit on an
    intro.

My name's Max and I am a collector of memorabilia from the German
Kriegsmarine of WW2. My collection can be viewed here at my site:
    www.atlantik-pirat.com

I have decided to join this group, as being a collector of Naval items
I have a keen interest in Navigational Instruments.

Whilst doing a Google search for some items that I have in my
collection (and items that I am looking for), I came across an
archived message regarding a couple of instruments that I have.

The Instruments in question are the Dennert & Pape (gwr) HR-2 and
MHR-1. I have neen trying to gather information on these Navi
Insruments to help understand them a little better. I know of a few
in Museums around the Globe and a couple in private collections. I
would like to share mine with members of this Group, as these are
    seldom seen anywhere.

If you click on this link (or copy and paste), I have posted a few
    stills for all to see:

    http://www.panoramio.com/user/707446

You will also be able to see the rarely seen Bygrave AML Position Line
Ruler, that the MHR-1 (and the HR-1 Luftwaffe equivalent) was based
    on.

The only other Navigational Instrument that keeps eluding me is the
Carl Zeiss Jena (blc) ARG-1 (Astronomisches Rechengert 1). This was
a Luftwaffe intrument, but the Kriegsmarine ordered a small number to
carry out trials on U-boats. These proved so successful, they were
adopted by the U-boat Arm. The only difference between the Luftwaffe
and Kriegsmarine instrument, is the letter 'M' on the top of the
casing. Everything else (including the FL~~~~ Luftwaffe code)
    remained the same.

    If anyone knows of one.....

All the very best and thank you for taking tme to read my post.

    Max
