    On my Mac, the "option" "0" key gives a degree symbol in most of the fonts.  But in the font that I used (Menlo), that key gives "MASCULINE ORDINAL INDICATOR" which is different from the degree symbol. After hunting around, I found in Menlo:

    This is Menlo.  Degree Symbol°  Masculine Ordinal Indicatorº

    So, it is a case of me being sloppy and assuming the same key gives the same character for different fonts.
