John, seeing as you are in SA and neither a Brit nor one of us damned colonials, n/either one would be correct for you. I've also seen numerous British references to "gybing upwind" which here in the States is taken to mean something lubberly at best. We call it "tacking". Usage varies. At best. [pun intended]
