Axel, In a pinch, I'd get rid of the job and head west into the sunset ... Or so I like to dream. I have a 50' old classic offshore wooden trawler, designed by Arthur Defever in the mid-1960s. In fact, he owned my boat for 2 years until he built a new boat for himself. The little ship is a very comfortable ocean crosser, including a traditional saloon with fireplace, engine telegraphs, and other nice touches not found on today's boats. I keep her in Santa Barbara, CA and cruise primarily among the offshore islands around here. Although I have plans to head down to Cabos San Lucas this spring. And I too have my eye on that once in a lifetime dream of the circumnavigation. I own a Canadian built Reliance 40'. She is a impressive and massive long keeler I enjoy sailing immensely. I usually sail around the 'Ijsselmeer' (The Netherlands) and the 'Waddenzee', a tricky estuarie to the north of holland. And yes, I am a blue water wanna-be aswell. I hope to do some serious sailing in the future. What other point is there in owning a money-drain. But like so many others I have not yet given up job, friends and the prospect of children. Allthough all the previous mix well with long distance cruising except perhaps a job. Cheers, Axel
