To what extent are you boat owners, sailors, voyagers, etc. who pursue navigation to actually operate their boats? We have a nice (but heavy) Kelvin&Hughes sextant but use it rarely. Our longest "voyages" may be 48 hours out of sight of land, and can easily be completed by DR. Both of us can reliably get fixes within 2 or 3 nm on calm water when the astro bodies are conveniently visible. Availability in the North Atlantic is often zero for several days at a time, as others have pointed out.
