I have a Davis 25 ($100 or so when it was new). The shades on my sextant did not pivot easily, and I found that the index error shifted after I changed shades probably because I bent the frame a little moving them. The fix was easy. I put a little toothpaste on the hinge, sat down, and moved the shades a hundred times or so to polish up the pivot. I rinsed the toothpaste off and all has been fine since. I also have a Freiberger Drum Sextant bought about the time the wall came down. The optics are not at all hazy. I own both a split mirror and a whole horizon mirror for the instrument. The split mirror does a little better with poor light. The whole horizon mirror is easier to use. Pick your poison. By the way Freiberger has a web site http://www.fpm.de.
