    Herman,

High clouds can work in a pinch if the edges are sharp. Try and find some Mylar Solar film. Taping this film to the sight tube will work for direct Sun observation. I recommend Thousand Oaks Optical film.  If the index mirror shades on the MK 3 can be removed and taped in front of the sight tube then there will be enough shading for index error by Sun.

Hello Brad, with the Davis MKIII it is not possible to look direct to the sun. The horizon shades are too light, I used last night Venus, that works, but is not useable if I want to use the sun. So perhaps high cloud with sharp edge. Hopefully not to many clouds that hide the sun.
    Regards,

    HermanD
