Byron: I have tried to see the various reasons in Navlist under "The Darn Old Cocked Hat"for the position of the ship when a fix is a Cocked Hat, but to no understanding. I have taken and taught ships position with so many kinds of fixes and I have clear understanding of the ship position from many years at sea. My way of thinking is different than the book and the knowledge of the others. In the past my way was used and taught to a small group of Navigators, and the Navy at Officers Schools including Newport and Annapolious
If you look at my “Franklin Piloting Technique you will see that I use two lines of position for my position and the third line for an indicator of accuracy, The third line is call the indicator.
My many years of at sea Navigation taught me to not go along with that which is in the books but to do better, with Navigation accuracy. In Celestial navigation you need only two lines of position for the fix as in pilotinig. The closer to ninety degrees for the fix will give the best possible fix.
Other lines of position needs to support the accuracy and support the lines intersection, but the 90 degrees intersection can- not be beat for accuracy.( indicators)
If the closer to 90 intersection is not surported by other lines look at the nexts closer to 90 for the near perfect fix. These conclusions are from many years at sea an not from the books, writer who did not go to sea. Think about this Idea. I may write more about this.
