I think it's more the remarkable coincidence of a full lunar eclipse with the winter solstice, which is quite rare. The "darkest night" is hype, obviously. If you want a dark night, northern Greenland is a good candidate.

Off hand it would seem to me that any night with out a moon would be darker than that on 12/21 with a full moon and a total lunar eclipse.
So is there anything to this darkest night business or is this just some media hype?
