A petroleum barrel is, and has been for at least 50 years (probably much
longer) 42 gallons. This has been in oil field production, natural gas
transmission, etc. 1 gallon = 231 inches^3.
Oil and anti-freeze are commonly sold in barrels (or drums) of 55
gallons, but these are referred to as "55 gallon (drums or barrels)".
