I believe there is anoyher way of checking the Byrave or any similar device:
* define a single fiducial mark on each scale and move the scales to make them co-located.
* choose a number of angles on one scale.
* pre-calculate the the angles on the second scale at which these should be met with the pre-determined angles on the first scale
* compare the pre-calculated values with the ones actually found.
