Attached is a cell phone picture I took through an inexpensive night scope of Orion near 23 h local mean on October 14, a moonless night. A handheld phone isn't great for low-light photography which is why I was playing with the scope to begin with. The image isn't as bright as what I perceived with my eye but even in the photo you can see the treeline.
I was pretty near 39° N, 76° W if you want to see what might be lighting up the horizon for me in that particular direction, but I can tell you that the worst of it from Baltimore and Washington were behind me.
